Poetry Thursday -When I Am Among the Trees

When I Am Among The Trees
Mary Oliver
When I am among the trees,
especially the willows and the honey locust,
equally the beech, the oaks, and the pines,
they give off such hints of gladness.
I would almost say that they save me, and daily.
I am so distant from the hope of myself,
in which I have goodness, and discernment,
and never hurry through the world
but walk slowly, and bow often.
Around me the trees stir in their leaves
and call out "Stay awhile."
The light flows from their branches.
And they call again, "It's simple," they say,
"and you too have come
into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled
with light, and to shine."

I'm so glad you got a copy of Thirst...the irony of the title is that reading it is like taking a drink of cold clear water when you're dreadfully thirsty.
The photo is just perfect for the poem...thanks for sharing as I'm in a meeting that is 30 minutes late in beginning and needed a "soul drink" badly!
Nature has a way of coaxing us from our weariness, calming our restlesseness, and refilling us with vigor after our rest. Beautiful photo and poem.
This was beautiful! I need a copy of that book because she fills me up :) Thank you!!
Becca, this was a wonderful selection for the day. Mary Oliver says it all.
Mary Oliver is one of my favorite poets ... so glad to find your blog!
